I remember applying for my first job, just out of college and back in my home country of Albania. My past work experiences as a college student were helpful, but each new job had its challenges. It was also a great opportunity to grow and learn.
Mind you, I had a foreign college degree, which surely gave me an edge, but it was not suited to most jobs I was applying for. So, it was tough but also a good test to see what I was willing to do to get my first job!
Well, two decades later, I find myself on the other side of the hiring process, looking at CVs of young people fresh out of college or still in school. I can see their zeal and desire to find a job that accommodates their school and life engagements (we all work remotely at Sfida.PRO & SfidaBiznesi.com) and provides them with that initial income.
Why did I do this long intro? Well, because as I now look at CVs of people who would like to do an internship or get hired, I'm taken aback by the behavior of an individual who, having never done an internship or worked with me, claims on their CV that they have!
It is a bit frustrating to have other employers call or message you to ask for a reference for an individual who has never worked with you but claims to have. I can understand it happening once out of eagerness to get hired, but the second and third time it is very demoralizing.
As much as I would like to help such an individual, it is not excusable. It puts me in an awkward position where I have to clarify that this person never worked with us. It also undermines the trust we place in the hiring process.
For those reading this and looking to enter the job market, here are a few tips:
- Be Honest: Your CV should reflect your true experiences and skills. Fabricating experiences can lead to serious consequences.
- Seek Real Opportunities: There are numerous legitimate ways to gain experience, such as internships, volunteer work, or freelance projects. Pursue these opportunities genuinely.
- Leverage Your Network: Use your connections to find opportunities and get recommendations. Genuine endorsements go a long way.
- Continuous Learning: Keep enhancing your skills through courses, workshops, and certifications. This will make you a stronger candidate.
To all aspiring professionals out there, remember that integrity and honesty are key. These qualities will not only help you land your first job but will also pave the way for a successful career.
