Albania is currently considered as the most corrupt country in Europe. Though this does not make the news much – a recent study produced by INSTAT (The National Institute of Statistics) with the support of the EU, based on individual interviews of some 5.700 citizens from all over the country, reported that 1 in 3 had paid a bribe within the last 12 months in return for public services received in public offices, institutions and administration, which they are entitled to receive freely.
The problem with corruption in Albania is not that the government has not committed to doing something about it, but that in effect it has done nothing – period!
